Best soccer balls for juggling

The ball that makes a kid better at juggling is usually not the ball they play games with.

A young player keeping a soccer ball up with their foot

The short answer

Juggle with a well-inflated ball one size down from the game ball, on grass. For most kids that means the adidas Starlancer Club in a size 3 or 4 — its butyl bladder holds pressure between sessions, which matters more for juggling than for anything else, because a soft ball drops dead off the laces. A futsal ball is the best indoor option, and a size 1 mini is a drill ball rather than a first ball.

Juggling is the only common soccer drill where the right ball is not the ball the age division plays with. Every other recommendation on this site points at the match size, because that is what develops a kid for games. Juggling is a touch exercise, and touch exercises get easier to learn with a ball that gives you more repetitions per minute — which means a little smaller, a little firmer, and crucially not the one that has been sitting half-flat in the garage since August.

Pressure matters more than the ball

If you change exactly one thing before the next session, change the pressure. A soft ball absorbs the strike instead of bouncing off it, so the ball dies on the first touch and the kid gets two touches instead of ten. Nothing about ball choice compensates for that.

Law 2 puts a size 5 between 0.6 and 1.1 atmosphere at sea level, which the Law itself states as 8.5 to 15.6 pounds per square inch — a wider window than most people assume, but still a window, and juggling wants the firm end of it. For a size 3 or 4 the figure is the one printed on the ball by the manufacturer, which is also the number Molten's own care instructions tell you to inflate slowly to. Soccer ball PSI by size has the full picture.

For a committed player who juggles seriously, a hand-stitched ball holds its shape over far more hours than a machine-stitched rec ball, and the consistent flight makes the difference between learning a touch and fighting the ball.

What size to juggle with

The rule of thumb is the game size, or one size down if the player is struggling to get past three or four touches. A smaller ball demands a more accurate contact and gives faster feedback, which is the whole point of the drill. Going back up to the match size afterwards feels easy, which is the pleasant part.

Game sizes are AYSO's published divisions: size 3 for 6U and 8U, size 4 for 10U and 12U, size 5 from 14U. The juggling column is a training choice, not a rule.

One thing to be careful of: a size 1 mini is a genuinely useful drill ball and a terrible first ball, and a large share of the size 1 market is commemorative display merchandise that is not built to be kicked at all. Size 1 vs size 3 covers how to tell them apart.

Surface changes the answer

Juggling happens wherever the kid happens to be standing, and the surface does more damage to a ball than the juggling does. Three cases worth separating:

  • Grass or turf. The best place to juggle and the kindest to a ball. Any ball on this page works.
  • Driveway or concrete. Abrasive, and it will scuff a machine-stitched cover fast. Use the cheapest ball that holds air rather than the best one — or read best soccer balls for concrete, which is about exactly this problem.
  • Indoors. A futsal ball, every time. The low bounce is why futsal is the best touch-development format there is, and the Select Jinga is sold in a Junior size as well as Senior, so a younger player is not handed an adult ball.

The common mistake is juggling the match ball on concrete all summer and then wondering why it flies oddly in September. Keep the good ball for grass.

1. adidas

adidas Starlancer Club

The sensible default youth ball — right size range, right price, air stays in.

Best for
The default rec ball at every size, U6 through U13+
Levels
U6 — first kicks · U7–U8 rec · U9–U10 · U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Sizes 3, 4 and 5
How it fits
Check the size on the ball, not the box: size 3 is for roughly U8 and under, size 4 for U9–U12, size 5 from U13.

What we like

  • Sold in all three youth sizes in the same model, so a family with two kids at different levels buys one thing twice
  • The butyl bladder genuinely does hold air longer — it is the difference between pumping weekly and pumping monthly
  • Cheap enough to own two so one can live in the car

Where it falls short

  • Machine-stitched seams are not as durable as thermally bonded ones and will eventually let water in
  • The printed graphics scuff off well before the ball fails
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Machine-stitched construction with a durable polyurethane cover (adidas)
  • Butyl bladder, which adidas rates for better air retention than latex
  • Sold in sizes 3, 4 and 5

2. Select

Select Numero 10

Worth the money from about U12 upward, and a waste of it before then.

Best for
A U12+ player who wants a proper match-quality ball
Levels
U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Size 5 (also sold in smaller sizes)
How it fits
Primarily a size 5 ball. Confirm the size on the specific listing before ordering for a U12 or younger.

What we like

  • A noticeably better ball in flight than anything in the rec tier, which a U13 striking it properly will feel
  • Select balls hold their shape and stitching over far more hours than machine-stitched rec balls

Where it falls short

  • Costs several times what a Starlancer does, which is hard to justify for a kid who mostly plays in a yard
  • Overkill below about U11 — a size 4 player gets little from match-ball construction
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Select's best-selling all-round match and training ball
  • Hand-stitched construction
  • Size 5 is the primary listing

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

3. Mikasa

Mikasa FT5 Goal Master

A durable, slightly overlooked ball for an older player, and the heat-bonded cover is the real reason to pick it over a stitched rec ball.

Best for
Recreational and hard-surface play, U13+
Levels
U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Size 5
How it fits
Size 5 is the U13-and-up match size. The same ball is sold for footvolley, so read the listing title rather than assuming a youth size exists.

What we like

  • Heat-bonded rather than stitched, so it takes on much less water on a wet morning than a rec ball at the same price
  • Mikasa builds ball bladders for several sports and its air retention is reliably better than the bargain tier

Where it falls short

  • Size 5 only, so it is no use below about U13 — the younger brackets need a size 3 or 4
  • Firmer feel than adidas or Select, which some kids dislike on a cold morning
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Heat-bonded construction, which Mikasa credits for its water resistance (Mikasa)
  • PU outer cover (Mikasa)
  • Carries the FIFA quality stamp (Mikasa)
  • Listed in size 5, and also sold as a footvolley ball (Mikasa)

4. Select

Select Jinga Futsal Ball (Junior)

The right ball for a real indoor or futsal season, and the Junior size means a younger player is not handed an adult ball.

Best for
Indoor and futsal play, sized by age
Levels
U7–U8 rec · U9–U10 · U11–U12
Type / surface
Futsal (low bounce)
How it fits
Buy the Junior size for U8 through about U12 and the Senior (size 4) above that. A futsal ball is graded by bounce rather than by the outdoor size chart, so do not read Junior as a size 3 outdoor ball.

What we like

  • Split into Junior and Senior rather than sold in one adult size, so an U8 is not playing with a size-4 ball
  • The genuinely low bounce is the whole point of a futsal ball and cheap indoor balls do not deliver it

Where it falls short

  • The heavy, low-bounce feel is wrong for outdoor grass play, so this cannot be the only ball
  • Costs more than a rec outdoor ball of the same nominal size
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Butyl bladder with polyester fibers inside, which Select credits for the bounce and control (Select)
  • Sold in a Junior size as well as Senior — the Junior is the youth futsal ball (Select)
  • Durable PU surface with a textured pattern (Select)
  • FIFA Basic approved, one-year warranty (Select)

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

5. Wilson

Wilson Traditional Soccer Ball

Buy it as a second, disposable yard ball. Do not buy it as the ball your kid takes to games.

Best for
The cheapest usable yard ball

Multiple sizes
How it fits
Check the printed size carefully; Wilson's youth sizing is listed inconsistently across retailers.

What we like

  • About as cheap as a real soccer ball gets, which makes it the right thing to lose in a hedge
  • Widely stocked, so replacing it is easy

Where it falls short

  • Loses air faster than a butyl-bladder ball and needs pumping most weeks
  • Not a ball for organized games — the flight is inconsistent once it softens
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Entry-level recreational ball
  • Machine-stitched panel construction
  • Sold in youth sizes

Is a heavier ball better for learning?

Sort of, and it is worth being precise about why. A futsal ball is heavier for its size and barely bounces, so it has to be lifted rather than bounced — which forces a cleaner contact on the laces and makes the technique transfer upward when the player goes back outdoors. Select's Jinga line gets its low bounce from a butyl bladder with polyester fibers inside, which is a deliberate build rather than a side effect.

What is not true is that a waterlogged outdoor ball is a useful training weight. FIFA's quality marks require a laboratory test program that checks balls for water absorption precisely because a ball that takes on water stops behaving predictably. A heavy ball helps when the weight is designed in; it hurts when it is a wet cover.

For the pressure question in full, soccer ball PSI by size and how to inflate a soccer ball are the two pages to read, and best soccer ball pumps covers what to buy. If the ball has spent the summer in a driveway, how to clean a soccer ball will get it usable again.

And if the ball is being used for solo practice more broadly rather than juggling specifically, a rebounder changes the economics of a driveway session completely — best soccer rebounders for kids has the picks.

Common questions

What size soccer ball is best for juggling?

The player's game size, or one size down while the technique is new. A smaller ball demands a more accurate contact and gives faster feedback, so a 10-year-old learning to juggle gets more out of a size 3 than a size 4 and then moves back up. AYSO's divisions put size 3 at 6U and 8U, size 4 at 10U and 12U, and size 5 from 14U.

What is the best soccer ball for juggling?

The adidas Starlancer Club for most kids, in whichever size fits their age — it is cheap, it comes in sizes 3, 4 and 5, and its butyl bladder holds pressure between sessions, which matters more for juggling than for games. For a committed older player, the hand-stitched Select Numero 10 keeps its shape over far more repetitions.

Does ball pressure matter for juggling?

More than the ball does. A soft ball absorbs the strike instead of bouncing off it, so it dies on the first touch. Law 2 puts a size 5 between 8.5 and 15.6 psi, and juggling wants the firm end of that range. For a size 3 or 4 the correct figure is the one printed on the ball by the manufacturer.

Is a futsal ball good for juggling?

It is the best indoor option. A futsal ball is heavier for its size and barely bounces, so it has to be lifted rather than bounced, which forces a cleaner contact on the laces. Select's Jinga line builds that low bounce from a butyl bladder with polyester fibers inside, and it is sold in a Junior size as well as Senior.

Can you juggle with a mini soccer ball?

Yes, as a drill ball rather than a main ball. A size 1 is useful for close-control work precisely because it is unforgiving. The thing to watch for is that a large share of the size 1 market is commemorative display merchandise that is not built to be kicked, and the product photographs do not distinguish them.

Should you juggle on concrete?

You can, but use a cheap ball for it. Concrete is abrasive and will scuff a machine-stitched cover quickly, and a scuffed, out-of-shape ball flies unpredictably when it goes back on grass. Keep the good ball for grass and turf, and keep the yard ball for the driveway.
