The short answer
Youth soccer jerseys run small — they are cut athletically, so a kid who wears a medium in everyday clothes is often a large in a jersey. Buy two, because back-to-back practices and a single jersey do not combine. A plain option like the adidas Entrada 22 is what most rec clubs use, because it takes numbering.
There is not a great deal to say about practice jerseys, which is itself worth saying — this is a low-stakes purchase that people overthink. Two things genuinely matter: the size, which is not the size you expect, and the number, which is two.
Start here
Pick by your kid’s level
The right answer changes with the level, not just the shoe size. Find your kid’s bracket and start there.
The standard plain practice jersey. Cheap enough to own two, plain enough for a club to number and print, and available in enough colors to match an existing kit.
The better buy if you want one top that covers practice and everyday wear — slightly heavier fabric, and it looks like a training top rather than a team shirt.

The sizing catch
Soccer jerseys are cut athletically, which in youth sizing means slim and short. adidas's youth range in particular runs small: a kid who is a comfortable medium in everyday clothes is frequently a large in a jersey.
Two consequences worth acting on:
If they are between sizes, go up. A jersey that rides up gets worn once and then refused.
If they are mid-growth-spurt, go up regardless. The slim cut means there is very little room to grow into, so a jersey bought to fit exactly will be too short by spring.
A practice jersey comes off soaked and needs a day to dry. Two practices in a week plus a game, on one jersey, means either it goes back on damp or it goes on dirty.
They cost little enough that two is not an indulgence, and it removes the same category of problem that three pairs of socks removes. For a travel player training four times a week, three.
Plain, or a training top?

If the club has asked for a plain jersey in a specific color to number, buy the Entrada. If you want one top that covers practice and being a kid, buy the Tiro.
What to expect from the fabric
adidas describes the Entrada 22 as using moisture-absorbing AEROREADY, and that is the relevant spec: a practice jersey's job is to move sweat away and dry fast, which it does.
What it does not do is keep a kid warm. These are thin, deliberately — cool in summer and no use at all in cold weather. For a cold spring practice, the jersey goes under a layer rather than being the layer.
And the light colors show grass stains permanently. Buy a dark color unless the team has specified otherwise, or accept that a white practice jersey has one clean season in it.
Washing them
Wash warm, not hot. Heat degrades the technical fabric's wicking over time.
Skip the fabric softener. It coats the fibers and directly reduces moisture wicking — the one thing you bought the jersey for.
Line dry if you can. Faster than you would think, and gentler on printed numbers.
Turn printed jerseys inside out to wash, which protects the numbering.
What about match jerseys?
Usually supplied by the club, and usually not something you buy. Where you do buy one, the same sizing advice applies and more so — a match jersey is worn for a full season and often handed on, so erring towards the larger size is sensible.
Replica professional jerseys are a different purchase entirely: they cost several times a practice jersey, they are not cut for numbering, and a kid will grow out of one inside a year. Excellent gifts, poor practice kit. See the gift ideas.

Small. They are cut athletically, and adidas's youth sizing in particular runs slim and short — a kid who wears a medium in everyday clothes is frequently a large in a jersey. If they are between sizes or growing fast, size up.
How many practice jerseys does a kid need?+
Two. A practice jersey comes off soaked and needs a day to dry, so two practices in a week plus a game on one jersey means it goes back on damp or dirty. For a travel player training four times a week, three.
What is the best plain jersey for team numbering?+
The adidas Entrada 22 is what most rec clubs use — plain, available in a wide range of solid colors, and cheap enough to own two. Training tops like the Tiro look better off the field but are rarely acceptable as a numbered team shirt.
Should you use fabric softener on soccer jerseys?+
No. It coats the fibers and directly reduces moisture wicking, which is the one property you bought a technical jersey for. Wash warm rather than hot, skip the softener, and turn printed jerseys inside out to protect the numbering.
Are replica pro jerseys good for practice?+
Not really. They cost several times a practice jersey, they are not cut for team numbering, and a kid will grow out of one within a year. They make excellent gifts and poor practice kit — buy a plain jersey for training and keep the replica for weekends.
