Best youth goalkeeper jerseys

The one category where paying more buys you less protection, not more.

A young goalkeeper in a long-sleeve keeper jersey

The short answer

Buy the Vizari Arroyo Youth Goalkeeper Jersey. It is the cheapest shirt here and one of only two whose listing specifies padded elbows, which is the single feature a young keeper gets any protection from. The Just 4 Kicks Campeon is the other padded option; the adidas, Nike and Under Armour teamwear jerseys all cost more and specify no padding at all.

A keeper jersey looks like a solved problem — long sleeves, loud color, done. It is not, because the thing most parents assume they are buying is usually absent, and the one jersey on the shelf that does have it is often the cheapest one in the rack.

Why a keeper needs a different shirt at all

Two reasons, and only one of them is about the child's body.

The first is a rule. Law 4 of the Laws of the Game requires the two teams to wear colors that distinguish them from each other and the match officials, and requires each goalkeeper to wear colors that are distinguishable from the other players and the match officials. A keeper in the team shirt is not legally kitted, which is why clubs hand out a bib and why a rotating keeper ends up in a stretched hand-me-down that nobody owns.

The second is landing. A keeper is the only player on the field who deliberately throws themselves at the ground, and the parts that hit first are elbows, hips and knees. Law 4 permits non-dangerous protective equipment of soft, lightweight padded material — it names knee and arm protectors specifically — and it separately permits goalkeepers to wear tracksuit bottoms. The rules are built to let a keeper be padded. Most keeper jerseys simply are not.

What actually separates one youth keeper jersey from another

Not the fabric. Every jersey on this page is polyester with a branded moisture treatment — AEROREADY on the adidas shirts, Dri-FIT on the Nike ones, a wicking treatment on the Vizari. Those are real and they are universal, so they cannot be the basis of a decision.

Four things do separate them, and all four are checkable on a listing before you spend anything:

  1. Whether the elbows are padded. Vizari's youth jerseys specify reinforced padding at the elbow, and the Just 4 Kicks Campeon specifies soft elbow padding for diving. The adidas Squadra 21, the adidas Tiro 25 Competition, the Nike Park Goalie II and the Under Armour Wall all specify no padding at all. This is the biggest difference on the page and it runs opposite to price.
  2. The sleeve construction. The Tiro 25 Competition uses raglan sleeves, so the seam does not sit on the point of the shoulder. The Under Armour Wall uses 4-way stretch with a dropped hem that stays tucked through a dive. On a keeper, who spends the game with their arms above their head, this is the thing extra money genuinely buys.
  3. The fabric treatment. AEROREADY on the adidas shirts, UA Microthread on the Under Armour. Near-universal in principle, but Microthread is the one that genuinely keeps up with a keeper who sweats through a shirt or plays in the wet.
  4. How visible it is. A keeper jersey has a job the rules set for it: not matching either team. The Vizari and Just 4 Kicks jerseys are sold in loud sublimated colorways for exactly that reason, and a teamwear shirt in a club's own palette is the one most likely to clash.

Long sleeves, and whether they are compulsory

They are not a rule. Every jersey on this page is long-sleeved because that is what the keeper category is, and the reason is abrasion rather than warmth: a bare forearm on dry grass in August takes the skin off, and a keeper who has been grazed once stops diving.

In genuine heat a short-sleeved shirt plus a padded sleeve is a defensible alternative, and Law 4 permits arm protectors of soft, lightweight padded material. For almost every family it is more kit to lose for no gain, and the long-sleeve jersey is simply the simpler answer.

The thing to watch instead is temperature in the other direction. A single layer of polyester is not a cold-weather garment, and a keeper stands still for most of a match — they get cold faster than anybody on the field while doing less to warm up. That is a base-layer problem, not a jersey problem, and the cold weather gear page is the right starting point for it.

1. Vizari

Vizari Arroyo Youth Goalkeeper Jersey

The honest budget pick: padding where a rec keeper lands, and no money spent on anything else.

Best for
A rotating rec keeper who is in goal a quarter of the game
Levels
U6 — first kicks · U7–U8 rec · U9–U10 · U11–U12
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, EVA foam elbow padding
How it fits
Cut generously for a youth jersey. On a slim player the sleeve can be loose at the elbow, which moves the padding off the joint it is meant to protect — if it slides, size down rather than up.

What we like

  • The cheapest route to real elbow padding, which makes it the sensible buy for a child who is in goal on rotation rather than every week
  • Loud keeper colorways are the point rather than an afterthought, and a keeper who can be told apart from both teams is a refereeing requirement as well as a style choice
  • Elastic cuffs stop the sleeve riding up the forearm on a dive, which is where rec keepers pick up most of their grass burns

Where it falls short

  • Vizari is a value brand and the fabric feels like it: thinner and less substantial in the hand than the adidas and Nike jerseys here
  • Sizing runs by Vizari's own youth bands rather than the YXS-YXL scale the teamwear brands use, so an existing jersey is a better guide than the label
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Shock-absorbing EVA foam padding on the elbows (Vizari, via the retailer listing)
  • 100% polyester with a moisture-wicking treatment
  • Reinforced seams, crewneck, elastic cuffs
  • Sold in youth sizing

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

2. Just 4 Kicks

Just 4 Kicks Youth Goalkeeper Jersey

The simplest way to put a new keeper in a proper padded shirt, as long as matching a club kit is not a requirement.

Best for
A padded first keeper shirt, U9 and up
Levels
U9–U10 · U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, padded elbows
How it fits
Youth sizing. Size by chest rather than age, and allow room for a base layer in cold weather — the padding sits at the elbow, so a tight sleeve puts it in the wrong place.

What we like

  • The only keeper shirt here whose listing specifies elbow padding, which is the one protective feature a diving keeper notices first
  • The bright colorways do the other job of a keeper shirt: not matching either team, and being easy to pick out from the sideline
  • Cheap enough to replace when it is outgrown mid-season

Where it falls short

  • An Amazon-native brand rather than teamwear, so it will not match a club's existing kit family
  • Elbow padding only — a keeper on hard ground still needs padded bottoms separately
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Soft padding on the elbows, which the listing states is there to protect the arm on a dive (Just 4 Kicks)
  • Breathable lightweight fabric (Just 4 Kicks)
  • High-visibility colorways — orange, sky blue, pink and neon (Just 4 Kicks)
  • Listed in youth sizes for little kids through teenagers

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

3. adidas

adidas Squadra 21 Youth Goalkeeper Jersey

The right first keeper jersey on price and fit, as long as you plan to add padded bottoms separately rather than expecting the shirt to protect.

Best for
The default first keeper shirt, U8 through U13+
Levels
U7–U8 rec · U9–U10 · U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, unpadded
How it fits
Regular fit, so there is room for a long-sleeve base layer underneath in cold weather. Size by chest rather than age — a keeper jersey that is too tight pulls at the shoulder every time the arms go up, which is most of the job.

What we like

  • The cheapest way into a proper keeper-specific jersey from a brand clubs already buy, rather than an outfield shirt pressed into service
  • Recycled polyester interlock is a denser weave than entry teamwear jersey, so it survives a season of washing
  • Cheap enough that outgrowing it mid-season is an inconvenience rather than a loss

Where it falls short

  • No padding specified anywhere on the listing, so a keeper diving on dry baked ground gets nothing from it
  • Stock is down to single sizes, so the size you need may simply not be there
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Long sleeve, regular fit, crewneck (adidas)
  • 100% recycled polyester interlock (adidas)
  • Moisture-absorbing fabric (adidas)
  • Shaped back hem (adidas)
  • No padding specified on the listing

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

4. Nike

Nike Youth Park Goalie II Long-Sleeve Jersey

Buy it for fit and for matching a Park kit, not for protection — and plan on a base layer under it.

Best for
A keeper who refuses to wear anything bulky, U9 and up
Levels
U9–U10 · U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, unpadded
How it fits
Slimmer through the body than the adidas keeper jerseys. On a tall player size up for sleeve length rather than width.

What we like

  • Thin, plain and light — a keeper who complains that padded jerseys feel like a coat will wear this one
  • The Park line is the Nike teamwear clubs most often already own, so matching an existing kit is realistic

Where it falls short

  • No padding at all, which on hard summer ground is exactly when a keeper stops wanting to dive
  • A single thin layer gives up on a cold day, so it needs a base layer underneath for most of the season in most of the country
  • Stock is down to single sizes and colors, so the one a club wants may not be available
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Long-sleeve youth keeper jersey from Nike's Park teamwear line (Nike)
  • Listed in youth sizing
  • No padding specified on the listing

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

5. adidas

adidas Tiro 25 Youth Competition Long-Sleeve Goalkeeper Jersey

The right jersey for a keeper who plays the whole game in goal every week, bought for shoulder mobility and kit matching.

Best for
A designated club keeper, U11 and up
Levels
U11–U12 · U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, match tier
How it fits
Regular fit with a genuinely stretchy body, so it tolerates a base layer better than its measurements suggest. Raglan sleeves run long by design; that is the construction working, not a sizing error.

What we like

  • Raglan sleeves are the real difference on this jersey: the seam does not sit on the point of the shoulder, so nothing binds when a keeper reaches overhead
  • Stretch fabric rather than flat polyester, which is what stops a jersey pulling tight across the back in a dive
  • Tiro is the line most US clubs specify, so this is often the keeper jersey that matches the team without a conversation

Where it falls short

  • No padding, despite being the most expensive adidas jersey here — the money buys mobility, not protection
  • Match-tier keeper stock sells down to odd single sizes, so the color a club specifies may not exist in the size the child needs
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • Keeper-specific design adidas says was developed using professional player insights
  • Raglan long sleeves for shoulder mobility
  • Stretchy 100% recycled polyester with AEROREADY sweat management (adidas)
  • Ribbed crewneck, regular fit
  • Youth sizes YXS through YXL

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

6. Under Armour

Under Armour Boys' Wall Goalkeeper Jersey

The pick for fabric performance rather than protection — worth it for a committed keeper who plays through bad weather.

Best for
A keeper who plays in all weather and wants the fabric to keep up
Levels
U13+ travel & club
Type / surface
Long-sleeve keeper jersey, unpadded
How it fits
Cut athletic through the body with 4-way stretch, so it is meant to sit close. Allow for a base layer if the player wears one.

What we like

  • A keeper-specific jersey rather than an outfield shirt with long sleeves, and the 4-way stretch is a real construction difference when the arms go above the head
  • Microthread is the best fabric here for a keeper who sweats through a shirt or plays in the wet
  • The dropped hem stays tucked through a dive, which thin teamwear jerseys do not

Where it falls short

  • No padding at all, which on hard summer ground is exactly when a keeper stops wanting to dive
  • Under Armour teamwear will not match a club already standardized on adidas or Nike kit
Manufacturer’s published specs
  • UA Microthread fabric, which Under Armour states dries faster and stretches without absorbing sweat (Under Armour)
  • 4-way stretch construction (Under Armour)
  • Dropped, shaped hem (Under Armour)
  • Listed in youth sizing
  • No padding specified on the listing

These are the manufacturer’s own claims, not measurements we took.

How much padding is in a padded jersey, honestly

Less than the phrase suggests. Elbow padding in a youth keeper jersey is a thin foam pad sewn into the sleeve. It takes the sting out of landing on grass or turf and it stops the first graze. It is not armor, and it does nothing at all for hips and knees, which is where a keeper on hard summer ground actually gets hurt.

That is not a reason to skip it — a pad that prevents elbow grazes prevents the specific injury that makes a child stop diving, which is the whole game at this age. It is a reason to know what the rest of the solution looks like. Padded keeper bottoms protect the joints that a jersey cannot reach, and the youth goalkeeper pants picks compare the published padding on each one.

Padding, sleeve construction and sizing as each product listing states them. Price rises down this table; protection does not.

Sizing a keeper jersey, which is a shoulder question

An outfield jersey is sized on the chest. A keeper jersey has to clear the shoulder joint through its full range, because the arms go straight up over and over, and a jersey that binds at the shoulder gets taken off at half time and never worn again.

  • Size by the chest of a shirt that currently fits, then try the arms-overhead test before the tags come off. If the hem lifts above the waistband of the shorts, the body is too short.
  • Allow for a base layer if the player wears one. Both adidas jerseys here are regular fit and the Tiro 25 Competition is genuinely stretchy; the Nike and Under Armour shirts are cut slimmer.
  • Check the stock before you settle on a size. Several of the teamwear jerseys here are down to single sizes and colors, so the size run on paper is not the size run you can actually buy.
  • Do not size up a padded jersey to grow into it. A sleeve that is too loose puts the elbow pad somewhere other than the elbow, which removes the only reason you bought it.

And if the shirt is a padded one, sleeve length matters more than the chest, because the pad has to land on the elbow. Youth soccer jersey sizing covers the outfield side of the same question.

Is the expensive keeper jersey worth it?

Sometimes, for two honest reasons, and neither of them is protection.

The first is mobility. Raglan sleeves on the Tiro 25 Competition and the 4-way stretch on the Under Armour Wall are real construction differences, and a keeper who plays the full ninety minutes in goal every week does notice a shirt that never binds at the shoulder. That is what the money buys.

The second is that a thirteen-year-old who likes their kit wears it, trains in it and looks after it. That is worth something real, even though it is not on a spec sheet. What is not worth anything is the assumption that the premium jersey is the protective one — on this page the relationship is exactly inverted, and a family buying for safety should spend the difference on padded bottoms instead.

The jersey is rarely the limiting factor. What the keeper lands on usually is.

Washing it, briefly

Same rules as any jersey, because it is the same fabric. Nike's own guidance is cold water on a gentle cycle, turned inside out, no excess detergent because soap buildup traps odor, no fabric softener because it stops detergent reaching the fibers where the odor sits, and air dry flat rather than tumble, because heat makes printed numbers crack and peel.

The padded jerseys need one extra thought: foam holds water, so a padded sleeve takes meaningfully longer to dry than the rest of the shirt. Hang it by the shoulders rather than folding it over a line, or the elbows will still be damp on Sunday morning. The gloves are the item in a keeper's bag that genuinely rewards care — how to wash goalie gloves has that routine, and it is not the same one.

And if you are kitting out a new keeper from scratch, the jersey is the cheap part. Gloves are the purchase that matters, they are a consumable, and they need sizing properly: start with the youth goalie glove size chart, then goalie glove cuts explained for what the word on every box means, and the budget glove picks if the child is in goal on rotation rather than by choice.

One last thing that is not a keeper decision at all: a goalkeeper buys cleats on exactly the same terms as everybody else on the field, and the badge on the side tells you less about fit than the line within the brand does. Nike vs adidas vs PUMA on fit is the short version.

Common questions

What is the best youth goalkeeper jersey?

The Vizari Arroyo Youth Goalkeeper Jersey for most families. It is the cheapest shirt here and one of only two whose listing specifies padded elbows, it is cut for youth sizing rather than shrunk from an adult pattern, and the sublimated colorways do the other job of a keeper shirt — not matching either team. The Just 4 Kicks Campeon is the other padded option.

Do goalkeeper jerseys have padding?

Some do and most do not, and it does not follow price. On this page Vizari's youth jerseys and the Just 4 Kicks Campeon specify padding at the elbow, while the adidas Squadra 21, the adidas Tiro 25 Competition, the Nike Park Goalie II and the Under Armour Wall all specify none. Check the individual listing rather than assuming the category includes it.

Does a goalkeeper have to wear a different color jersey?

Yes. Law 4 of the Laws of the Game requires the two teams to wear colors that distinguish them from each other and the match officials, and requires each goalkeeper to wear colors distinguishable from the other players and the match officials. That is why a keeper in the team shirt gets handed a bib, and why buying a keeper jersey in a loud color is a kit requirement rather than a style choice.

Do youth goalkeepers need long sleeves?

It is not a rule, but it is the sensible default. Long sleeves are about abrasion rather than warmth — a bare forearm landing on dry grass or turf takes skin off, and a keeper who has been grazed once stops diving. In real heat, a short-sleeved shirt with a padded arm sleeve is a legal alternative, since Law 4 permits arm protectors of soft, lightweight padded material.

How should a goalkeeper jersey fit?

Loose enough to clear the shoulder through a full overhead reach, which is the test an outfield jersey never has to pass. Size by the chest of a shirt that currently fits, then raise both arms: if the hem lifts above the shorts waistband, the body is too short. Allow for a base layer if the player wears one, and never size up a padded jersey, because a loose sleeve puts the elbow pad somewhere other than the elbow.

Is an expensive goalkeeper jersey worth it for a kid?

Only for mobility or for motivation. Raglan sleeves on the adidas Tiro 25 Competition and the 4-way stretch on the Under Armour Wall are genuine construction differences that a keeper playing full games notices. Neither adds protection — both cost more than the two padded jerseys on this page and specify none at all. If the goal is a safer keeper, spend the difference on padded keeper bottoms.

What else does a young goalkeeper need besides the jersey?

Gloves first, sized by measuring across the palm, and padded bottoms if they play on hard, dry ground. The jersey is the cheap part of a keeper's kit and the gloves are the consumable: grip latex wears out within a season of regular use whatever you pay. Keeper-specific shorts are not a thing worth buying, because what a keeper needs below the waist is padding, not a better short.

How do you wash a padded goalkeeper jersey?

Cold water, gentle cycle, inside out, normal detergent, no fabric softener, and air dry flat rather than tumbling — the same routine Nike publishes for any jersey, since softener blocks detergent from reaching the fibers where odor sits and dryer heat cracks printed numbers. With a padded jersey, hang it by the shoulders rather than folding it over a line, because the foam in the sleeves holds water and dries slowest.
